Job Description

We require a CNC Machinist with interest in widening their engineering experience to join an engineering. This role suits somebody who has completed an apprenticeship in CNC Machining or similar, but wants to be involved in a wider range of engineering activities than a job shop environment can provide.

About us

This company designs & manufactures unique machine tools based on electrical discharge machining (EDM). Our products are focussed on the aerospace and automotive sector, where we aim to streamline disassembly processes by providing a method to remove fasteners in a way that is faster, safer for the operator and at lower risk of damaging components.

About the role

You will be working in a small but ambitious team on all aspects of our production. This will include operating our CNC mill and lathe, mechanical assembly, electrical cabinet wiring, production testing, documenting QA and more. We understand that this is a wide variety, so in-house training will be offered for any employee.

As we are a small business, you will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of activities across our engineering operations, and there is real room for growth in the role as the company expands.

The role would suit somebody who is able to adapt to new techniques quickly and work independently, solving problems as they arise and having a keen eye for engineering detail. Experience with CNC machining & programming and using hand tools is essential (drills, grinders, torque wrench, wire strip/crimp, etc). Any experience with SolidWorks modelling and engineering design is a big bonus!

Roles and responsibilities

  • Operating and programming CNC mill and lathe
  • Mechanical system assembly from drawings (from hand-held parts to 1mx1m footprint machines)
  • Electrical system assembly from drawings (from small sensor wiring to large cabinet wiring) [training available]
  • Identify ways of streamlining production and feed this back to the engineers
  • Documenting processes for quality assurance (QA) purposes
  • Work with sub-contract manufacturers and external suppliers
  • Other responsibilities related to manufacturing and assembly

Competencies and experience

Essential attributes;

  • Experience of programming, setup, and tooling for CNC machines
  • Good grasp of mechanical part & assembly drawings (read and interpret)
  • Strong skills with mechanical and electrical hand tools
  • Fault finding and troubleshooting skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to determine if assembly is out of spec
  • Strong documentation of production and note taking throughout
  • Experience in working with sub-contract manufacturers to procure components that cannot be manufactured in-house
  • High standard of verbal and written communication
  • Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) qualification – Machining Technician or similar (equivalent job experience acceptable)

Desirable attributes;

  • SolidWorks modelling and drawing skills
  • Understanding of electrical wiring diagrams
  • Understanding of stock taking and the systems used
  • Full UK driving license
